HC Deb 12 July 1937 vol 326 cc865-6
62. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will take some steps to make available a supply of fresh fruit, such as plums, etc., for the Regular and Territorial forces during August when supplies of home-grown fruit are plentiful and cheap?

The Financial Secretary to the War Office (Sir Victor Warrender)

Part of the daily ration of both Regular and Territorial soldiers is issued in the form of a cash allowance, and Commanding Officers can purchase fresh fruit from this allowance at their discretion. They have every facility for doing so, including advance information from the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes when there is likely to be a plentiful supply of any particular fruit.

Mr. De la Bère

Is the Minister aware that "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"; and could he not see the Flowers, Plants and Vegetables Publicity Committee with a view to increasing the consumption of fruit?
