HC Deb 25 February 1937 vol 320 cc2159-60
12. Mr. White

asked the Minister of Labour whether he can now state the intention of His Majesty's Government with regard to the recommendation of the Unemployment Insurance Statutory Committee that the salary limit for unemployment insurance for non-manual workers should be raised from £250 to £400 per annum?

Mr. E. Brown

No, Sir.

Mr. White

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when he will he in a position to make a statement?

Mr. Brown

Not to-day.

Mr. Denman

Is my right hon. Friend aware that there is a strong public demand for this reform?

Mr. Brown

I am aware of that.

Sir Percy Harris

Does the right hon. Gentleman remember the item in the Government's programme at the last General Election, which was over a year ago?

Mr. Brown

The hon Member is wrong if he is referring to the insurance of non-manual workers. The matter to which he refers does not correspond with it at all. It could not be so, because at that time the committee was considering the problem.
