HC Deb 17 February 1937 vol 320 c1163
18. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the Gold Coast Government contemplates the passing of an Ordinance whereby the Paramount Chiefs will be given power to secure the removal from their districts of any non-native African to whom they may personally object; and whether, as this course is likely to undermine native confidence in British administration, he will have the Ordinance withheld?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I have ascertained from the Governor that no such Ordinance is contemplated.

Mr. Sorensen

While thanking the right hon. Gentleman for his reply, may I take it that no Ordinance is contemplated which will give greater powers to Paramount Chiefs?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

The hon. Member knows that we are endeavouring to develop native local government and indirect rule, and we are increasing the power of local native authorities, not of any Paramount Chief individually. They are part of the local native authority.
