HC Deb 17 February 1937 vol 320 cc1162-3
16. Vice-Admiral Taylor

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty in how many cases sub-lieutenants who have not obtained their watch-keeping certificates have been detailed for training in the Fleet Air Arm?

Sir S. Hoare

Up to the present 12 sublieutenants have commenced training as Fleet Air Arm pilots before obtaining their watch-keeping certificates.

Vice-Admiral Taylor

Can my right hon. Friend say how these sub-lieutenants will obtain their watch-keeping certificates without which they cannot be promoted to lieutenants and may therefore lose their seniority in their naval rank?

Sir S. Hoare

They will be promoted to the acting rank of lieutenant when they have become qualified by service and confirmed on obtaining their watch-keeping certificates, after completing their initial flying training. They will obtain these certificates while serving afloat in Fleet Air Arm appointments.
