HC Deb 15 February 1937 vol 320 cc837-8
48. Mr. Day

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, the country of origin of all the timber at present being used in the erection of seats or stands for the purpose of viewing the Coronation procession?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health (Mr. R. S. Hudson)

(for the First Commissioner of Works): So far as stands being erected by my Noble Friend's Department are concerned, the greater part of the timber is of Canadian origin: the remainder is homegrown.

49. Mr. Grimston

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether he is aware that excursions from the provinces have been organised to view the Coronation illuminations during the weeks commencing 17th May, under the general impression that they would be continued during that week, and that the recently announced decision that they will be discontinued after 17th May has occasioned great disappointment; in these circumstances will he reconsider the matter or, if this is not possible, state the reason for the above decision?

Mr. Hudson

An announcement of the general Coronation arrangements issued on 16th January made it clear that floodlighting would end at midnight on Whit Monday, 17th May. This decision was reached after very careful consideration of all the relevant circumstances, and having special regard to the very great strain that will be imposed on the police at this period, and especially whilst the flood-lighting continues.
