§ 18. Mr. CROWDER (for Lieut.-Colonel SANDEMAN ALLEN)asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether, in view of the refusal by the Birkenhead Town Council of permission to exhibit recruiting posters, he has an alternative method of calling for recruits?
Lord STANLEYThe exhibition of posters is a valuable method of bringing to notice the advantages of naval service and cannot well be spared. But the Admiralty rely on other methods also, including advertisements in newspapers and issues of recruiting pamphlets.
§ Mr. WISEAs the town council which have refused permission presumably have a Socialist majority, can it not be pointed out to them that their attitude in pressing sanctions incessantly is inconsistent with an endeavour to prevent recruiting for the Navy?
§ Mr. GEORGE GRIFFITHSWill the hon. Gentleman see that when these leaflets are issued there is printed at the bottom "We supply margarine"?
§ Sir W. BRASSCan my hon. Friend say whether it is a fact that the local authorities can refuse these leaflets?
§ Mr. LOGANWill the hon. and gallant Gentleman bear in mind that there are many young men on the Merseyside who are unemployed, and would it not be better to find them work?
§ Mr. THURTLEWill the Parliamentary Secretary consider having 1685 posters exhibited in night clubs and other places for the idle young men of the West End?
