HC Deb 06 May 1936 vol 311 cc1683-4
14. Lieut.-Commander FLETCHER

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty the amount, if any, of coal displaced by oil fuel in naval shore establishments during the past five years?

The CIVIL LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. Kenneth, Lindsay)

The estimated amount of coal displaced by oil fuel in naval shore establishments during the period in question is 25,000 tons. The actual quantity could not be ascertained without a great amount of labour. I may say, however, that the general policy of the Admiralty is to use coal in shore establishments and exceptions to this policy are not made except where great advantages are gained, and after close scrutiny.
