HC Deb 04 May 1936 vol 311 c1338
1. Lieut. - Commander FLETCHER

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been called to the fact that motor tests and trials are to be carried out at Wrynose and Hard Knott, in the county of Cumberland; and will he take steps to forbid such tests and trials so that the amenities of this district may be preserved?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

I have no power to prohibit the holding of reliability trials, but the hon. and gallant Member will remember that participants are liable to proceedings if they contravene the law.

Sir W. BRASS

If the local authorities have given permission for these trials surely the people in the area have no objection to them?

Mr. HORE-BEUSHA

I only said that I have no power.

Mr. W. ROBERTS

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether anybody has any power to prevent such trials of motor cars?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I think not, unless there be a contravention of the law.

Mr. ROBERTS

Is it not necessary to ask the permission of anybody or any authority?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I think not.
