HC Deb 04 May 1936 vol 311 cc1337-8
1. Mr. DAY

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether, in view of the increasing shortage of parking places for motor cars in the west end of London, he will consider allowing cars to park on one side of the road in specified parts of the Royal Parks during certain hours?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I regret that I am unable to accept the hon. Member's suggestion, which I feel would seriously impair the present attractiveness of the Royal Parks.

Mr. DAY

Is it not a fact that the parking of cars there is allowed when ceremonies are taking place at Buckingham Palace?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

Yes, along the rising part of the Mall, where there is a section like Rotten Row where people ride. When there is a levee we are forced to allow that, but we regret it.

Mr. DAY

Is it not the case that cars are sometimes left there in the afternoon for a considerable time?

Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

Does not the trouble arise partly from the fact that some people use cars which are much too large?
