§ 39. Mr. T. WILLIAMSasked the Postmaster-General how long it is since Sunday delivery of letters was abolished; why it has been re-introduced in certain large cities; what firms applied for Sunday deliveries; and what was the attitude of the Union of Post Office Workers?
§ Major TRYONSunday delivery was abolished in 1921, and it has not been re-introduced. I assume the hon. Member has in mind the permission given to three or four football pool firms to collect their mail on the last two Sundays. Congestion in the Post Office was thus avoided, and staffing arrangements were facilitated. The Union of Post Office Workers expressed their dislike of the arrangement.
§ Mr. WILLIAMSDoes the right hon. and gallant Member agree that members of the Union of Post Office Workers are being called upon to work on Sundays?
§ Major TRYONNo, Sir. The union objected. The staff were not called upon to work on Sundays, but 100 volunteered.
§ Mr. H. G. WILLIAMSDoes the Union of Post Office Workers refuse on Sunday nights to collect letters advertising a Socialist meeting for the following Sunday?
