HC Deb 09 March 1936 vol 309 cc1789-90
38. Mr. LOGAN

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that ex-soldiers in Liverpool and district, over 40 years of age, sent from Employment Exchanges to post offices for jobs as temporary postment, are refused work; and is he prepared, irrespective of age, to give physically fit men work?

Major TRYON

No age limit is applied at Liverpool in the engagement of ex-service men for temporary employment as postmen. About 70 men over 40 years of age are so employed at the present time.

Mr. LOGAN

Is it not the case that in Liverpool and district these men are debarred from getting this work, and after service in the Army are refused on the ground of age?

Major TRYON

No, Sir. There are 170 men employed, and of these 71 are above the age mentioned.

Mr. LOGAN

If I give him particulars will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman receive them?

Major TRYON

I shall be glad to receive any information on the matter from the hon. Member.
