HC Deb 23 June 1936 vol 313 c1597
63. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the latest estimated number of native population in the dependency of Tanganyika and the amount spent on health services by the Government for the last year for which returns are available?

The VICE-CHAMBERLAIN of the HOUSEHOLD (Major Sir George Davies)

The native population numbered 5,022,640 at the 1931 census. Direct expenditure on the Medical Department in 1935 amounted to £193,930.

Mr. DAY

Is anything further to be done to improve the health services?

Captain DOWER

Is it not the fact that a far larger sum is being spent than was spent when Tanganyika was under other administration than our own?
