HC Deb 23 June 1936 vol 313 cc1575-6
27. Mr. STEPHEN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of houses built last year in the city of Glasgow; the number at present under construction; and what steps he intends to take to expedite the building of houses in view of the present unsatisfactory position?

Sir G. COLLINS

The total number of houses completed by the Corporation of Glasgow during 1935 was 3,878, and the number under construction at 31st May, 1936, was 2,612. With regard to the latter part of the question, I have personally discussed housing progress with the Corporation, who have decided to increase their output from 4,000 to 6,500 houses a year.

Mr. STEPHEN

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that 6,500 is a very small figure, in view of the terrible shortage and the fearful overcrowded conditions in Glasgow, and will he not try to get the Corporation to make it 20,000?

Sir G. COLLINS

The number 6,500 is a very considerable increase on any previous year, and, if the Corporation keep to it, I believe a further step will be taken to increase that figure.

Mr. STEPHEN

Can the right hon. Gentleman give us any indication when the Corporation will begin on the 6,500 scale, seeing that they have only 2,600 under construction at the present moment?

Sir G. COLLINS

I shall require notice of that question. As the hon. Gentleman knows, the matter rests with the Corporation. I have given the House the information with which they have supplied me on the subject.
