HC Deb 31 July 1936 vol 315 cc1861-2
13. Mr. THORNE

asked the Secretary for Mines the amount of rates paid by colliery owners to the following local authorities: Derbyshire, Durham, Scotland, South Wales, Lancashire and Cheshire, Northumberland, and Yorkshire; and the amount of royalties paid to landowners in those counties referred to?

Captain CROOKSHANK

As the reply involves a number of figures, I will, with the hon. Member's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The information is as follows:

Estimated Total Amount of Royalties and Wayleaves (including the rental value of freehold minerals where worked by the proprietors) and of Local Rates paid by Colliery Owners in 1935:

District. Royalties, etc. Local Rates.
£ £
Scotland 729,000 35,400 (Credit)
Northumberland 319,000 36,400
Durham 691,000 108,300
South Wales and Monmouth. 1,152,000 206,500
Yorkshire 785,000 176,900
North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. 479,000 75,800
Lancashire and Cheshire 301,000 43,500

Notes.

1. Separate particulars in respect of Derby shire are not available.

2. In Scotland, rates are paid partly by the Colliery and partly by the mineral owner. Under the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1929, the colliery owner receives that part of the rates relief which would normally go to the mineral owner, resulting in a credit balance to the colliery owner.
