HC Deb 14 July 1936 vol 314 cc1873-4
54. Mr. HANNAH

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will consider preparing a scheme to permit hon. Members to travel third class instead of first, the saving to the revenue being devoted to larger unemployment assistance in their constituencies?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the 1FREASURY (Mr. W. S. Morrison)

The Regulations already provide for hon. Members travelling third class, instead of first, if they so desire. Apart from other objections which might be taken to the second part of my hon. Friend's proposal, it would be essentially unsound in principle for the extent of unemployment assistance in any particular district to be dependent in any way upon the hon. Member's action in the matter of travelling.

Mr. THORNE

Would not that be a form of bribery?
