HC Deb 15 December 1936 vol 318 c2261
20. Sir WALTER SMILES

asked the President of the Board of Trade what are the numbers of yards of cotton piece-goods imported from this country into Egypt and into the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan for the six months ended 30th November, 1936, or to the nearest convenient date?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

During the six months ended November, 1936, the exports from this country of cotton piece-goods of United Kingdom manufacture registered as consigned to Egypt amounted to 31,370,000 square yards and to the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, 1,065,000 square yards.

Sir W. SMILES

Are the conditions of entry of cotton goods into Egypt and the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan the same, and can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the reason for the small exports to the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan is due to Japanese competition?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I cannot answer that question without notice.
