§ 5. Mr. GEORGE GRIFFITHSasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the person who was recently appointed reserve chairman of the appeal tribunal of Sheffield is a prominent member of one of the political parties and occupies the position of party whip; and, as this is inconsistent with the second paragraph of the Departmental letter of 25th February sent to the Trades and Labour Council, whether he will state what action he proposes to take in the matter?
Mr. STANLEYThe reserve chairman to whom I assume the hon. Member refers is a member of the Sheffield City Council, and I did not consider it necessay when appointing him to ask him to resign that position. The appointment was however made on the understanding that he would refrain from taking any prominent part in political activities, and I have no doubt that he fully understands this. In order that there may be no doubt on the matter I am bringing this reply to his notice.
§ Mr. T. WILLIAMSWhile I agree with the right hon. Gentleman that they ought not to prevent any persons from being a chairman, may I ask him whether he is aware that this gentleman is a member of the council and one of the Conservative whips?
Mr. STANLEYI think that in bringing my reply to this gentleman's notice I am doing all that is necessary.
