HC Deb 06 June 1935 vol 302 cc2031-2
73. Viscountess ASTOR

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs when it is proposed to publish the report of the departmental committee on the admission of women to the diplomatic and consular services; and what action is to be taken on its recommendations?

The LORD PRIVY SEAL (Mr. Eden)

I regret that owing to the pressure of more urgent business it has not yet been possible for His Majesty's Government to reach a definite decision on this question.

Viscountess ASTOR

Would the right hon. Gentleman give us some idea when he will report on this matter before making a final decision, and whether he will let the House discuss it?

Mr. EDEN

The Noble Lady will appreciate that this is a matter that does not rest with me. I can only as sure her that there will be no avoidable delay.

Viscountess ASTOR

The point was whether the House of Commons will have some say as to whether women are fitted for the diplomatic and consular services. Do not leave it to the Foreign Office, that is all I ask.
