HC Deb 16 July 1935 vol 304 c874
4. Mr. SUMMERSBY (for Sir JOHN POWER)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the serious foreign competition from which the boxboard industry is suffering; and what steps he proposes to take in the matter?

Sir A. LAMBERT WARD

The import duty on boxboards cannot be increased during the currency of our Commercial Agreements with a number of Scandinavian countries, but representations which have been made by the interests concerned will be borne in mind for consideration at the appropriate time.

Mr. PIKE

Will the hon. and gallant Gentleman convey to his right hon. Friend the fact that the Leader of the Opposition has now declared in favour of tariffs where competition is adverse to the interests of the British workman?

Mr. SUMMERSBY

May I remind the hon. and gallant Gentleman that when I asked this question on a previous occasion I was told that it would receive consideration, because I do not think the reply to-day is quite parallel with the reply I received then?
