§ 12. Captain PETER MACDONALDasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the present position in regard to the protest by His Majesty's Government to Japan in regard to the oil monopoly in Manchukuo; and whether there is to be any compensation for British interests which have suffered?
§ Mr. EDENNo reply has been received from the Japanese Government to the last communication which was made to them on this subject. The question of compensation is under discussion between the British interests concerned and the Manchurian authorities, but I understand that nothing concrete has as yet emerged from these discussions.
§ Captain MACDONALDHow long does the right hon. Gentleman think that he will have to wait before he gets a reply? Already some months have elapsed.
§ Mr. EDENOur communications reserve our position in the fullest degree, and the fact that no reply has been received does not, in our view, prejudice the position.
