HC Deb 22 November 1934 vol 295 c250
36. Sir C. RAWSON

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the question of the pollution of the sea by oil from ships was discussed at the recent meeting of the League of Nations at Geneva?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir John Simon)

Yes, Sir. At the request of His Majesty's Government this question was submitted by the Secretary-General to the Communications and Transit Organisation in July last. Attention was subsequently drawn to the matter by the United Kingdom delegate in the Second Committee of the Assembly on the 12th September during discussions on the preliminary report of the Organisation. In accordance with customary practice the Communications and Transit Organisation, after an initial enquiry, have summoned experts from the various countries concerned for a closer study of the problems involved. I understand that the preliminary meeting of these experts was held on the 19th November.
