HC Deb 21 June 1934 vol 291 cc545-6
55. Mrs. SHAW

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many Scottish schools listen in to the school broadcasting programmes of the British Broadcasting Corporation; and whether he is satisfied that these programmes form a useful adjunct to the normal school work?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for SCOTLAND (Mr. Skelton)

According to the records of the British Broadcasting Corporation, 264 schools in Scotland listen in to the school broadcasting programmes. My right hon. Friend is satisfied that broadcast lessons under appropriate conditions and in proper relation to the regular curriculum form a useful adjunct to school work, and he would be glad to see more Scottish schools taking advantage of the stimulus and assistance afforded by this service.

Mr. MAXTON

What steps do the schools take to co-ordinate the lessons delivered over the wireless with the schools' curricula?

Mr. SKELTON

Touch is kept between the Education Department and the Broadcasting Corporation on this subject.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

Would it not be better for the Under-Secretary to see that the school children are supplied with milk free of charge instead of having these carryings on?
