HC Deb 21 June 1934 vol 291 cc546-7
56. Mrs. SHAW

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of specialist teachers of physical training employed in Scottish State-aided schools; and whether steps are taken to provide an adequate supply of these teachers?

Mr. SKELTON

The number of specialist teachers of physical training employed in State-aided schools in Scotland is 424, of whom 271 are women and 153 men. The number employed has increased by approximately 50 per cent. in the past 10 years. During the current year 75 women are in training in the Dunfermline College of Physical Education and Hygiene, and 65 men in the Scottish School of Physical Education, Jordanhill, Glasgow. The annual output from these two sources is about 20 and 14, respectively.

57. Mrs. SHAW

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent physical training receives attention in the curriculum of Scottish schools?

Mr. SKELTON

My right hon. Friend is satisfied that physical training is receiving increased consideration and that more time is devoted to it, but as he is not convinced that it yet occupies in all areas its proper place in the school curriculum, he will continue to press its claims on the Education Authorities. It is now a condition in the approval of plans for new school buildings that adequate accommodation is provided for physical training, and the Department encourage the acquisition of large sites so that playing-fields may be included within the school boundaries.
