HC Deb 21 June 1934 vol 291 cc537-8
49. Mr. MITCHESON

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the increase in the imports of American goods since that country depreciated its currency; and, as in May, 1934, the identifiable imports of American manufactures, other than non-ferrous metals and petroleum products, totalled £1,780,000, as compared with £1,060,000 in May, 1933, an increase of 68 per cent., if he will state what measures he proposes to take to deal with this situation?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I am aware of the increase in imports of manufactured goods from the United States. It is open to the United Kingdom manufacturers affected, in the case of goods dutiable under the Import Duties Act, to apply to the Import Duties Advisory Committee with a view to increased duties upon goods of which imports from the United States have increased.
