HC Deb 14 June 1934 vol 290 c1892
48. Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGE

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether it is possible for this country to be self-supporting in eggs and poultry; and whether it is intended to make it so?

Mr. ELLIOT

Like other branches of agriculture, egg and poultry production is no doubt capable of very considerable expansion, given favourable conditions but I am sure my hon. and gallant Friend will agree that it is desirable both for the industry and for the Government to await the reports of the Reorganisation Commissions set up specifically to consider the future organisation of the egg and poultry industries in this country before formulating a long-term policy for the industry.

Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that considerable apprehension has been caused by the delay in producing the report of the Reorganisation Commissions; and can he do anything to expedite the production of the reports?

Mr. ELLIOT

I do not think there has been delay considering the importance of the subject which the commissions had to investigate and report upon.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Will the right hon. Gentleman say whether, if the proper means were made available, we could not become self-supporting in this respect?
