HC Deb 14 June 1934 vol 290 cc1892-3
52. Mr. BURNETT

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he will submit to the House a report as to the condition of the Westminster Crypt (St. Mary's Undercroft)?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

No, Sir. I am not aware that the present condition of the Crypt calls for any report.

Mr. BURNETT

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think that in the meantime it might be closed until such time as the improved finances created by the National Government enable it to be put into a better condition?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I do not understand what is the matter with it. It is in perfectly good structural condition, though there are differences of opinion as to whether it is beautiful or ugly.

Mr. BURNETT

Is not the Victorian decoration of the Crypt exceedingly ugly?
