HC Deb 04 December 1934 vol 295 cc1399-400
20. Mr. A. RUSSELL

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will state the numbers of motor vehicles, including both commercial and non-commercial vehicles, which have made use of the improved Forth ferry service at Queensferry in each month since the improved service was inaugurated, and also the revenue derived therefrom by the undertakers?

Mr. BLINDELL (Lord of the Treasury)

I have been asked to reply. As the answer involves a number of figures I will, with my hon. Friend's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

Since the 1st March, 1934, the Forth ferry service at Queensferry has been operated by a private company by arrangement with the London and North Eastern Railway Company and I am informed that the numbers of vehicles utilising the ferry during each month from the 1st March to 31st August, 1934, were as follow:

1934. Motor Cars. Goods Vehicles.
March 3,514 259
April 6,734 360
May 8,868 482
June 11,342 552
July 14,089 533
August 16,413 557
60,960 2,743

No accounts of the revenue derived from the operation of the ferry are published.

As foreshadowed in my hon. Friend's answer to the question asked by my hon. Friend the Member for East Fife (Mr. H. Stewart) on the 11th July last, a census was taken of the vehicles carried on the ferry at Queensferry during the week ended 19th August, 1934—a peak period—and this shows that 4,402 motor vehicles used the service during the week.
