HC Deb 04 December 1934 vol 295 c1399
23. Mr. THORNE

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has received any report from his factory inspector in connection with the death of a man at the Fulham gas works who was killed by a coke crusher; and if he is satisfied that the machinery was properly protected?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Captain Crookshank)

I understand that this accident occurred in a most unusual way, the unfortunate workman being drawn into the machine when trying to retrieve a rake. The machine had recently been installed, but I am advised that the Factory Department would not have suggested additional protection having regard to the narrowness of the opening and its height above the platform; and that the coroner's jury, though they inspected the machine and were told that they could add to their verdict a rider as to fencing, decided not to do so.
