HC Deb 04 December 1934 vol 295 cc1401-2
24. Mr. BERNAYS

asked the Home Secretary whether he has called for an inquiry into the causes that led to the recent suicide of the Dartmoor convict; and, if so, whether he will state what conclusions he has come to upon it?

Captain CROOKSHANK

The death of the convict in question was the subject of an inquest on the 29th November, which resulted in a verdict of suicide while of unsound mind. My right hon. Friend has received full reports and sees no occasion for any further inquiry.

Mr. BERNAYS

Will the Under-Secretary bear in mind that this is the

Allotments Acts at the present time. The Department issues certain explanatory leaflets for the guidance of allotment authorities, and my right hon. Friend will be glad to consider whether anything further is called for in that direction.

Sir A. WILSON

Will my right hon. and gallant Friend consider the possibility of circulating these leaflets, particularly in the depressed areas?

Mr. PALING

Where are the Ministers who are responsible for these answers to questions?

Following is the statement:

second case in a few months of the suicide of a man sentenced to flogging, and will he consider the advisability of setting up an inquiry into this form of punishment, which is causing great concern to a great many people in the country?

Captain CROOKSHANK

That is quite another question, of which notice will have to be given.
