HC Deb 04 December 1934 vol 295 c1407
41. Mr. DAVID EVANS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will enumerate those examinations for appointments in the Civil Service for which Welsh is included, as an optional subject and as a compulsory subject, respectively; and will he state the maximum number of marks allowed for Welsh in each examination as compared with English, French, and other languages?

Mr. COOPER

Welsh is an optional subject for candidates at the open competitive examinations for situations in the clerical classes (general and departmental) and for situations in the executive class of the Civil Service; the maximum mark allotted to Welsh at these examinations is the same (200) as is allotted to English, French, and other languages included in the scheme. Welsh is not a compulsory subject at any examinations held under the direction of the Civil Service Commissioners.

Mr. EVANS

Does not the hon. Gentleman think that Welsh should be made a compulsory subject for a public appointment in the Principality, especially those public appointments where the servants of the Crown come into close contact with the Welsh-speaking population?

Mr. COOPER

No, Sir.
