Mr. LEONARDasked the Postmaster-General (1) the cost of installing the overhead conveyor band in the Glasgow general post office which extends from the primary sorting section to the foreign sections; the monthly running costs, inclusive of motive power, repairs, oiling, cleaning, and painting; whether he can state if this installation has enabled a reduction of staff; and, if so, the number and saving effected;
(2) if his attention has been called to complaints made by the staff of the Glasgow general post office against the unsatisfactory functioning of one of the 968 conveyor belts, alleging excessive noise above a section of the staff, occupation of excessive space, obscuring the light, and, at the gravity chute adjacent to the West News Road, constituting a danger to the staff; and if he proposes to take any action calculated to remove the defects and permit the staff to work without the annoyance this particular conveyor causes?
