HC Deb 17 May 1933 vol 278 c356
27. Mr. MACLAY

asked the Minister of Health whether he is taking any steps to prevent an undue rise in the cost of building materials in the event of extensive schemes of slum clearance Colnciding with a large increase of private enterprise building?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of HEALTH (Mr. Shakespeare)

My right hon. Friend is watching the position. At present there is no reason for any extraordinary action.

Mr. MACLAY

May I ask whether publicity will be given in due course if, by any chance, an undue rise in prices takes Place?

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

May I ask what steps it is proposed to take if there is any increase in the cost of building?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

The Government have no intention of allowing anyone but the slum dweller to benefit by our slum clearance. If it is alleged that unreasonable prices are charged, there is a remedy in the hands of the consumer. He can go, through his federation, to the Imports Duty Advisory Committee and make representation for placing such building materials on the Free List.
