§ 29. Mr. D. GRENFELL (for Mr. RHYS DAVIES)asked the Home Secretary if he can give any information showing the number of organisations in this country, stating their titles, drilling adult males on semi-military lines, and the number of persons covered by each such organisation; and whether it is his intention to bring in legislation to stop all such drilling outside the officially recognised forces?
§ Sir J. GILMOURI have no precise information as to the number of such organisations, or as to the number of persons covered. With regard to the latter part of the question, unauthorised 357 meetings of persons for the purpose of being trained or of practising military exercises are prohibited by law and I have no reason to suppose that appropriate action under the provisions of the Unlawful Drilling Act, 1819, will not be taken should occasion arise.
§ Colonel WEDGWOODDoes that mean drilling without arms or with arms?
§ Sir J. GILMOURIt is difficult to say when physical exercises are really drilling or not. The law is directed against military training.
§ Mr. D. GRENFELLIs there not a difference between physical training and military display and formation? Is there not evidence that there are organisations in this country drilling on military lines?
§ Sir J. GILMOURNo, Sir. If the hon. Member has any information, I shall be glad to receive it. When trade union demonstrations march through London they march in fours.
§ Mr. GRENFELLBut do trade union demonstrations carry guns or imitation guns on their shoulders?
§ Sir J. GILMOURIf the hon. Member says that is being done I shall be glad to hear of it.
§ Mr. ATTLEEIs there any objection to marching in fours?
