HC Deb 16 March 1933 vol 275 c2141
87. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been called to the recent breaches of the Treaty of Versailles by Germany; and what action it is proposed to take in the matter?

Mr. BALDWIN

The hon. Member is no doubt referring to the alleged inconsistency with the Treaty of Versailles and subsequent agreements of the enrolment of auxiliary police and their presence in the demilitarised zone. These matters are under consideration.

Mr. CHURCHILL

May I ask whether there is any prospect of a Debate which would raise the question of the promotion of peace on the Continent of Europe taking place at an early date?

Mr. BALDWIN

If I thought that such a Debate would attain that object, I should be glad to consider it.

Mr. CHURCHILL

Am I to understand that there is no prospect of a Debate upon the European situation in the near future?

Mr. BALDWIN

My right hon. Friend must recognise that that is a question which it is impossible to answer without notice.

Mr. CHURCHILL

Then my right hon. Friend will consider this point if notice is given?

Mr. BALDWIN

If there is a general desire, of course one is bound to consider it, but that does not in any way pledge us to find time.

Mr. MAXTON

If one of the parties requested that such a Debate should take place on the Consolidated Fund Bill, would the Government be prepared to arrange for it?

Mr. BALDWIN

The subject for discussion on that Bill is always within the choice of the Opposition, and they can put down any subject.
