asked the asked the Minister of Labour the total number of workpeople employed in all trades and callings in Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the years 1920 and 1930, respectively?

Sir H. BETTERTON

I have prepared a detailed reply to this question, which I propose, with the hon. Member's permission, to circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the reply:

I regret that the statistics desired hr respect of 1920 are not available. The estimated number of persons aged 16 years and upwards insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts in Great Britain and Northern Ireland at July, 1921, was 11,337,650, including probably between 320,000 and 340,000 persons aged 65 years and over. At July, 1930, the number of insured persons aged 16 to 64 inclusive was 12,405,700. At the Population Census of 1921 the total number of persons aged 12 years and upwards returned as gainfully occupied in Great Britain, exclusive of employers and persons working on their own account, was 17,414,718. A Census of Population was not taken in Northern Ireland in 1921. Corresponding figures from the 1931 Population Census are not yet available. The figures given above include unemployed persons as well as those at work.
