HC Deb 11 July 1933 vol 280 cc923-4
31. Miss WARD

asked the Minister of Labour if he can inform the House when it is his intention to announce the Government's policy for dealing with unemployed persons who cannot reasonably hope to find work again in their own trade?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Henry Betterton)

The general industrial policy of the Government is well known to the House and is being steadily pursued. I think the Government may fairly claim that it is showing some solid evidence of success in reducing unemployment. As regards provision for those who remain unemployed, I cannot yet add anything to what I said in the Debate on 14th June.

Mr. MAXTON

Is there no possibility of the Government making known to the House before the Recess what the contents of the new legislation will be?

Sir H. BETTERTON

No, I cannot give any undertaking of that kind, but I will do my best to secure that it is known in ample time.

Mr. LUNN

May we have an answer from the right hon. Gentleman to the question on the Paper?

Sir H. BETTERTON

I have given an answer which I thought was a complete one. I will refer the hon. Gentleman for further details to the Debate of the 14th June.

Mr. T. SMITH

What has been done by the Government to deal with the surplus men in the mining industry?
