HC Deb 05 July 1933 vol 280 cc319-20
15. Mr. NEIL MACLEAN

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will approach the responsible railway company to have special trains running from Govan Railway Station to the Clydeside holiday resorts on 14th, 15th, and 17th July, and so relieve the congestion which takes place annually at this holiday period at the Glasgow terminal railway stations which serve the Renfrewshire and Ayrshire holiday resorts?

Mr. STANLEY

I am communicating with the railway company concerned and will let the hon. Member know the result.

16. Mr. MACLEAN

asked Vile Minister of Transport which are the holiday resorts on the islands of Arran, Bute, and the Greater Cumbrae, in the Firth of Clyde, where the combined steamer and railway fares are less than 100 per cent. dearer than pre-War fares, and to which of those resorts cheap holiday and week-end fares are in operation; and whether, in view of the approaching holiday season in the West of Scotland, he will approach those responsible with a view to having cheap fares granted to those places where the ordinary fares are still being charged?

Mr. STANLEY

I am informed that the combined railway and steamship fares to Clyde holiday resorts are generally less than 100 per cent. in excess of the corresponding pre-War fares. Through fares apply to Lamlash, Brodick and Whiting Bay in the Isle of Arran and Rothesay in Bute, and I understand that cheap summer tickets are available for these places. I (have no jurisdiction over these fares, but I am sending a copy of the hon. Member's question and this reply to the railway companies concerned.

Mr. MACLEAN

Will the hon. Gentleman endeavour to get more accurate information regarding the fares in these places?

Mr. STANLEY

I am sending a copy of the hon. Member's question to the companies. I have no jurisdiction in the matter.

Mr. MACLEAN

Will the hon. Gentleman let me know the reply that he receives?

Mr. STANLEY

Yes, Sir.
