HC Deb 04 April 1933 vol 276 cc1572-3
41. Mr. LLEWELLYN-JONES

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the recently issued report of the Central Narcotics Intelligence Bureau for the year 1932; and what further international action it is proposed to take with a view to dealing with the illicit traffic in dangerous drugs to which the report calls attention?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part of the question, I would remind my hon. Friend that under Article 23 of the Covenant of the League of Nations, the general supervision over the execution of agreements with regard to the traffic in opium and other dangerous drugs is entrusted to the League, and I presume that the matter to which my hon. Friend refers will be considered by the Opium Advisory Committee at its next meeting in May.

Mr. LLEWELLYN-JONES

Will the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs see that due attention is given to this matter when it comes before the Opium Committee of the League?

Mr. EDEN

Any initiative on this question would, I think, be taken by the Egyptian Government.
