HC Deb 12 May 1932 vol 265 c2061
19. Mr. GROVES

asked the Home Secretary whether the police officers responsible for licensing taximeter cabs, chars-a-banc, omnibuses, and tramcars pay visits to the workshops in which the annual renovation of vehicles is undertaken to examine the vehicles before completion, or whether they wait until vehicles are completed before the test is undertaken?

Sir H. SAMUEL

Premises of licensees are visited frequently by examining officers, and any vehicles which are being overhauled there are inspected in the course of such visits before being presented for test.

Mr. GROVES

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that I am a coach body builder and know what I am saying; and is it true that his officers actually visit the tram yards except upon the days when the vehicles are licensed?

Sir H. SAMUEL

Yes, I understand that they do. If the hon. Member, from the wealth of his personal experience, can give me further information, perhaps he will be good enough to see me on the subject.
