HC Deb 12 May 1932 vol 265 cc2061-3
20. Sir CHARLES OMAN

asked the Home Secretary whether the Advisory Committee of 12, which he recently appointed to function in connection with the board of film censors, is a body with frequent and regular fixed meetings, or whether it is to be called in to advise the board of film censors at their desire; and whether the names of the 12 members can be given?

Sir H. SAMUEL

The Consultative Committee on Film Censorship which consists of representatives of the local licensing authorities arranges its own meetings. I understand that the Committee has already held four meetings and is likely to meet regularly. The names of the members were published when the Committee was appointed. I will send my hon. Friend a list.

Sir C. OMAN

Can my right hon. Friend say, in the event of a clash of opinion between the Board of Film Censors and the Advisory Committee, which has the ruling power?

Sir H. SAMUEL

The Committee is only a consultative committee, but they can make representations to the Home Office. But my hon. Friend's question is pessimistically hypothetical.

Sir C. OMAN

Do I understand that this body has no power or authority over the censors whatever?

Sir H. SAMUEL

No, Sir, it has no statutory authority.
