HC Deb 12 May 1932 vol 265 c2065
23. Mr. BERNAYS

asked the Home Secretary what number of adult offenders is considered by his Department as the maximum any probation officer can successfully deal with at a time?

Sir H. SAMUEL

The experience of the Home Office leads to the conclusion that no definite figure can be suggested. The classes of the offenders dealt with and the nature of the officer's district, and the frequency of the sittings of the courts, are among the many factors which would make it impossible to suggest a maximum number.

Mr. BERNAYS

In view of the increase in offenders in London, will the right hon. Gentleman see that more probation officers are appointed?

Sir H. SAMUEL

I will consider my hon. Friend's suggestion.
