HC Deb 12 May 1932 vol 265 cc2065-6
24. Mr. MABANE

asked the Home Secretary how many persons have been killed or injured in the Metropolitan area in road accidents in which heavy road vehicles have been involved between 1st January, 1932, and 10th March, 1932, and from 10th March, 1932, to the last available date?

Sir H. SAMUEL

The figures for April are not yet available without calling for a special return, so that I regret that I cannot supply any information later than the figures which I gave in reply to the hon. Member's question on the 7th April last.

25. Mr. MABANE

asked the Home Secretary whether he has any evidence of an improvement in the observation of the law as to speed limits by heavy road vehicles in London and in the provinces since the new instructions to the police were issued?

Sir H. SAMUEL

The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police reports that the effect of the instructions issued by him has on the whole been satisfactory. As regards the rest of the country, the matter was discussed at the recent Central Conference of Chief Constables. I shall be issuing a circular to Chief Officers of Police shortly. I am not yet in a position to say to what extent any local measures already taken have been effective.
