HC Deb 10 May 1932 vol 265 c1712
38. Major DESPENCER-ROBERTSON

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office how many Army horses were sold in Egypt after the Armistice; and if his Department can take any steps to recover those which are still alive, many of which are in a pitiable condition?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE (Lord of the Treasury)

In the six years 1919 to 1924, approximately 11,000 Army horses were sold in Egypt. It is regretted that Army funds could not be expended on their re-purchase.

Major DESPENCER-ROBERTSON

Are we to take it that the Government intend to leave those wretched animals to their fate?
