HC Deb 23 June 1932 vol 267 c1239
2. Mr. HICKS

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons given employment on State-aided schemes during the six months ended 31st March, 1932, and the average period of employment?

Sir H. BETTERTON

As the reply includes a number of figures, I will, if I may, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the reply:

The numbers of workpeople directly employed on the main classes of State-assisted relief schemes at the end of each month from October, 1931, to March, 1932, were estimated as follow:

October 104,800
November 97,500
December 93,700
January 92,400
February 89,700
March 86,800
These figures cover schemes under the Development (Loan Guarantees and Grants) Act, 1929, and the Colonial Development Act, 1929, Ministry of Transport road works and Ministry of Agriculture schemes. To them should be added probably an equivalent amount of indirect employment provided by these schemes. Information is not available as to the average period of employment.
