HC Deb 01 December 1932 vol 272 cc982-3
52. Lieut. - Colonel Sir WALTER SMILES

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if the Government are taking any active steps in assisting the development of the new goldfield in Kenya?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

For the purpose of inaugurating a geological survey the Government of Kenya engaged the services of Sir Albert Kitson whose interim report on the Kakamega Goldfield was published in Kenya on the 26th October. The policy to be followed in regard to the development of gold mining in the Colony is now under consideration.

Mr. MORGAN JONES

Will the interests of the natives which own this land be amply safeguarded in connection with any development of the goldfields?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

Yes; I am perfectly certain that it is to the interest of the natives and of everybody else that where there is valuable gold it should be developed.

Mr. JONES

If on account of this development certain land now owned by natives is to be occupied, will arrangements be made to give them alternative land or make compensation for displacement?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

Most certainly.
