HC Deb 23 September 1931 vol 256 cc1640-1
40. Sir BASIL PETO

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware of the competition with Milford Haven trawlers by Spanish boats fishing in pairs with one long seine between the two, and that 60 such boats have been engaged in this fishing this year and have landed fish value nearly £15,000 at Milford in June, July and August; and whether, in view of the damage to the British trawler industry at that port and the economic effect of this export of capital he will take steps to prohibit the landing of fish by foreign vessels in our fishing ports?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Sir John Gilmour)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The suggestion put forward by my hon. Friend in the second part can only be considered as a part of the general question of foreign imports, as to which I am not in a position to make any statement.

Sir B. PETO

Has the Minister any information as to whether the catches of British fishing vessels are allowed to be landed at Spanish ports?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I will send my hon. Friend a copy of the reply given by the Secretary to the Department of Overseas Trade on the 6th July.
