HC Deb 26 November 1931 vol 260 cc487-8
4. Mr. MANDER

asked the Minister of Labour if he is aware that in certain cases recently the hours of work in certain industries have been lengthened beyond the limit of the 48-hour week; if he will state what reports have recently been received by him as to this; and what action it is proposed to take in the matter?

Sir H. BETTERTON

I have seen reports that extra hours have been worked in certain individual establishments. I understand that discussions have taken place on this subject between the appropriate organisations of employers and workpeople and this seems to me to be the right method of dealing with matters of this kind.

Mr. MANDER

Can the right hon. Gentleman say if the Government pro- pose to ratify the Washington Eight Hours Convention?

Sir H. BETTERTON

No, Sir.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Is the Minister of Labour aware that it is always the worst offender who sets the pace in these matters?
