HC Deb 13 May 1931 vol 252 cc1180-1
35. Mr. HANNON

asked the Minister of Transport if his attention has been called to the proposals of the railway companies to pool certain parts of their northern traffic, especially that passing through Carlisle; and if these proposals have been referred to one of the committees set up under Section 19 of the Railways Act of 1921?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

I have received representations on this subject from several Scottish local authorities. I have been informed by the railway companies concerned that, as part of their ordinary business, they are investigating the possibility of effecting economies and preventing waste in connection with their Scottish services; that no pool has been arranged; and that the proposals contemplated so far are not such as would require to be laid before me under the provisions of the Railways Act of 1921.

Mr. MACLEAN

Will the right hon. Gentleman try to get the companies whose lines run through Carlisle to Scotland to reduce some of the fares which are still standing at War rates?

Mr. MORRISON

The question of fares is a separate one. If my hon. Friend will communicate with me, I shall be glad to communicate with the companies.
