HC Deb 13 May 1931 vol 252 c1175
23. Mr. THOMAS LEWIS

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he will state the total number of lieutenant-commanders and lieutenants now undergoing the respective courses for war staff, gunnery, torpedo, navigation, anti-submarine, physical and recreational training, signal, and wireless telegraphy duties; and whether any reasons can be offered why only two lieutenants (ex-mate) are included?

Mr. AMMON

Fifty-nine lieutenant-commanders and lieutenants are now undergoing the courses mentioned. Only four applications for appointment to these courses were received from lieutenants, ex-mate, of suitable seniority, of whom two were selected for the Physical and Recreational Training course. The remaining two were, with the other candidates, considered on their merits but were not selected.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Are ex-mates, now lieutenants, encouraged to specialise in gunnery, torpedo and other executive specialist classes?

Mr. AMMON

I am afraid I should require notice of that question.
