HC Deb 11 May 1931 vol 252 cc808-9
46. Mr. SMITHERS

asked the Prime Minister the names of the organisations from whom he has received communications during the past 12 months urging a greater measure of protection for British industry?

The PRIME MINISTER

I have received communications from various bodies and persons from time to time on the subject of protective duties, and so, no doubt, have many of my colleagues, but I do not think that the expenditure of time involved in getting out a list as suggested by the hon. Member would be justified.

Mr. SMITHERS

May I ask whether any of these communications have come from the trade unions?

The PRIME MINISTER

Well, I could not answer that question definitely, but to the best of my knowledge, no.

Mr. McSHANE

Is it not true that the more these names change the more they are the same thing?
